Stair Lift Installation

Installing your new chair lift

Stairways tend to be narrow. At first glance, it may be hard to believe something as seemingly large and complicated as a stair lift fitting in such a limited space. Yet it’s quite feasible for staircases of different shapes and sizes and typically only takes a matter of hours.

Planning your Stair Lift Installation

Stairlift installation

We would say that we offer custom stair lift installation, but the truth is, nearly all installations require some level of customization. As such, some preplanning is necessary from our professional team of stair lift installation technicians. They’ll take into consideration the amount of space available, the incline of your stairs, any turns, your pivoting preferences and even your home’s unique style. They’ll also thoroughly test your home’s infrastructure to determine its ability to support the weight and constant motion of a stair lift. Of course, they’ll also discuss their plans with you and address any concerns or special considerations along the way.

Powering your New Stair Lift

Is a wall outlet needed for your stair lift? No, but they do help save money. If a dedicated line must be added for your lift, it will have to be added by an electrician. However, modern stair lifts consume so little energy that a wall outlet is more than sufficient. Either way, a traveling cable is necessary for most installations. This is needed as the lift operation is part of the chair, thus requiring it to provide continuous power even as it moves. Once our technicians have had a chance to inspect your staircase, they will discuss different options and help you make an informed decision.

Although backup batteries are included with all stair lifts, some homeowners prefer to exclusively use a battery-operated lift. These require less wires and work on our part, helping you save money. Of course, you’ll need to carefully monitor your lift’s power and recharge the batteries as necessary.

Total Stairlift Installation Time

Most typical stair lift installations take between 3 and 4 hours. Of course, greater needs for customization will likely result in a longer installation period. This is especially true for curved stair cases, which usually take a matter of weeks. However, there’s no way to provide a precise estimate until we’ve had a chance to consider the unique needs of both you and your home.

Installing the Stair Lift

While we design stair lifts to be as accommodating as possible, we must occasionally consider the removal of obstructions if they interfere with the lift’s railing. Although not common, windows are sometimes built along a staircase. If this is the case, something as simple as its sill can cause an obstruction.

The lift is primarily composed of a track and chair. The track is appended to the staircase by attaching custom tracking mounts to the steps. The holes are very easy to hide whether you have hardwood or carpeted steps. They will become noticeable if the lift is ever removed, though we can help fill them in for aesthetic appeal.
